Can Cats Eat Apples?
Curiosity and cats seem to go hand in hand.
Are you cats interested in apples? Are did they pull the whole stealing human food scenario?
If that’s the case, you’re probably wondering if apples are safe for cats.
Are Apples Safe For My Cat?
Certain parts of apples are safe for cats. The “meat” of the apple is safe for cats to eat in moderation.
If you were give your cats apples, I would recommend the same way you give apples to children.
You would want to peel the skin of the apple and cut them up in small pieces.
That is the safest part for the cat.
You also want to make sure you feed them in moderation. Cats are carnivores and their main food supply should be meat.
Apples alone do not contain enough nutrients for your cat to survive healthily on.
Are Apples Toxic To Cats?
If you’re like me, then you probably thought for sure that apples were not safe for cats.
That is because parts of the apple are toxic to cats. The stem, core, seeds and leaves are extremely toxic to cats!
Apple seeds contain cyanide which can be poisonous to cats.
If cats eat apple seeds, or part of the core of the apple, immediately take them to the vet. You want to catch cyanide poisoning early or else it can kill your cat.
Will My Cat Want to Eat Apples?
While certain parts of the apple are completely safe for cats, doesn’t mean every cat will want to eat apples.
Our of four cats that I have, only one has the curiosity to taste apples. While the statistic that one in four cats will like apples is not an exact, I would say its pretty close.
Each cat is different and therefore has different tastes.
The best thing you can do is to give your cat small tastes of apple to see if there is any interest. If so, then you can slowly incorporate a little more eat time.
Can Cats Eat Applesauce?
So, if cats can eat apples, what about applesauce?
In terms of eat-ability (that’s not really a word), I think most cats would probably prefer the texture of applesauce. The smoothness allows cats to eat it a little easier than full chunks of apple.
What you do need to be careful of when it comes to applesauce is certain store bought applesauce.
Applesauce that contains a lot of sugar can be dangerous for cats as it can cause stress on the cats organs.
So, cats CAN have applesauce, especially homemade applesauce or low sugar applesauce. However, you just want to make sure it is in small doses.
Can Cats Eat Apple Pie?
What about apple pie? Apple pie is similar to applesauce. While it is not dangerous for cats to eat apple pie, apple pie filling has more sugar than apples and applesauce.
Cats and apple pie should probably not be mixed only because of the extra sugar.
If your cat eats apple pie, I wouldn’t stress. It’s safe in small doses.
I would watch your cat for the next few days to make sure there are no other reactions to the apple pie.
Final Verdict: Can Cats Have Apples?
So can cats have apples? In short, can eat apples. You want to make sure they only eat the meat of the apples and not the seeds or the core.
Each cat is different so whether or not they like apples will depend on each individual cat.
And while this is safe for cats, they still need to be fed this in moderation.
